Evan Suma Rosenberg is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Minnesota. Previously, he was the Associate Director of the MxR Lab at the Institute for Creative Technologies and a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Southern California. His research interests are situated at the intersection of virtual reality and HCI, encompassing immersive technologies, 3D user interfaces, and spatial interaction techniques.

Dr. Suma Rosenberg’s research has been recognized with multiple best paper awards and has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Army Research Office, the Office of Naval Research, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, and Google. While at the MxR Lab, he contributed to an open-source initiative that had a major disruptive impact on the virtual reality industry and directed the development of a number of publicly released free software projects, including: (1) the Flexible Action and Articulated Skeleton Toolkit (FAAST) to support integration of gesture interaction in video games and virtual reality applications; (2) Fast Avatar Capture software for rapid scanning and animation of 3D human models; and (3) the Redirected Walking Toolkit for enabling infinite walking in virtual reality within limited physical spaces. His online research videos have been viewed over 2.4 million times and were widely covered by the press.

Dr. Suma Rosenberg has served as General Chair and Program Chair for IEEE VR, the leading conference in virtual and augmented reality. He was also the founding General Chair for the ACM Symposium on Spatial User Interaction and currently chairs the Steering Committee. He received his Ph.D. in 2010 from the Department of Computer Science at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. His team received first place at the 2015 SIGGRAPH Immersive Realities AR/VR Contest, and he received a Google VR Research Award in 2017.
